12+ Dry Skin Care Tips and Useful Information for All

Battling dry skin is a constant challenge for me, especially in the colder months. At its worst, it can leave me itching and miserable. I have therefore attempted to educate myself about the most effective ways to keep my skin moisturized and comfortable.

Preventing dry skin is easy. Too hot or hot air, low humidity, frequent contacts with water or detergent solution destroy protective layer and the skin loses its natural ability to retain moisture. With decreasing levels of water content of 10% skin becomes dry and starts to peel off.

Causes of Dry Skin

  • Dry skin is recognizable by its tight, rough feel and its dull appearance. Dry skin is apparent in its upper-most layer, the epidermis. Roughly 80% of the bodys epidermal cells are made of keratinocytes, composed of soft protein keratin. The epidermal cells are born in the lowest layer of the epidermis, the basal layer. As these cells rise toward the outer (horny) layer, they undergo many changes, including the increase in the amount of keratin they produce.
  • By the time the cells reach the top, they are no londer alive, and are formed entirely of keratin. If the cells contain too little keratin, the appearance begins to look cracked and flaky as cells slough off. Keratin needs water to keep it pliable and healthy; when there is not enough water, the keratin crumbles and the cells cant stay together. This is what happens when the skin becomes dry. In order to keep this from happening, a way must be found to keep water trapped in the skin, keeping the keratin healthy.

Best Dry Skin Care Tips

  1. In the winter time should not only moisturize the skin, but also to restore its lipid barrier using products containing essential fatty acids, vitamins A and E and vegetable oils.
  2. If you have dry skin on face, you should avoid saunas, swimming pool, lotions and scrubs. Try to use less soap, because your skin is already very dry.
  3. Every day before going outdoors applied to the skin softening bold and nourishing cream containing biologically active substances, which increase metabolic processes. This is particularly important in autumn and winter.
  4. Take cooler showers or baths.
  5. Pat yourself dry gently with a towel, rather than rubbing.
  6. Masks for dry skin have softening, moisturizing, toning and nourishing action. They include egg yolk, vegetable oil, sour cream, cream, honey, fresh vegetables and fruit, extracts of medicinal herbs. Masks for dry skin are advised to make 2 times a week.
  7. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing, to seal in remaining moisture.
  8. For dry skin are not recommended steam baths.
  9. Exfoliate ashy, flaky skin as needed, but don’t overdo the scrubbing.
  10. Use mild cleansers.
  11. Pay special attention to lower legs and feet, which tend to be dryer because they’re farther from your heart.
  12. Cut back on bath and shower time (some dermatologists suggest 3 minutes).
  13. Don’t scratch dry, itchy spots; apply more moisturizer instead. And use a humidifier, especially in the bedroom.

How to Better Dry Skin Care for Skin Glowing

1. Nutrition
Is used not only mitigating components and fat-soluble vitamins (A and E) but also the substance that restore the lipid layer of the skin. All these components are commonly found in vegetable oils.

2. Protection.
Dry skin is very sensitive to adverse environmental factors. Due to the reduced secretion of the sebaceous glands, it is quickly dehydrated. Protection from natural factors must fit into one of the first places in the care of dry skin. To do this in the winter applies creams from the weather, containing emollients (beeswax, lanolin, fats and oils). In the summer time – use cream, moisturizer and antioxidant components.

3. Skip the Drying Soaps
Soaps can be drying. Stick with a creamy moisturizing cleanser that contains glycerin or petrolatum.

4. Protect Your Face, Too
If you have super, duper sensitive skin, consider avoiding rinsing your face with tap water, which can contain harsh minerals that are especially drying to the skin (Dr. Dennis Gross once told me New York water contains a lot of harsh minerals, while Seattle water, for example, does not. Go figure). Instead use a cold cream like Ponds to cleanse your face or use bottled spring water.

5. Dont Forget Your Lips
Licking your lips will not moisturize them and instead will help dry them out. Lips retain less moisture than other parts of the body, so they tend to dry out more quickly. A simple lip balm helps.

6. Moisturize After Showers or Hand Washing
Your skin will tell you when its dry. If your skin feels tight and taut, its time to add moisture. There are so many tips to moisturizing skin that I created an article on it.

7. Exercise
Exercise increases blood flow and thus the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your skin. These factors help skin look dewy and firm, undermining dry skins brittle stiffness.

"During the summer, it is recommended to exclude products that contain irritating components, as well as substances which can enhance the damaging effect of sunlight."
